Kirk was so shocked by her words that he gaped like a fish out of water.
What is going on, Lord?
He put a hand to the stinging place on his chest. To his surprise, it came away sticky with blood.
He hadn't seen the rock Chris pitched at him and heâd walked straight into it. It caught him a hard, stinging blow right below his collarbone. Since he hadn't taken time to grab another shirt, heâd had no protection from the sharp edge.
Heâd stopped once in his pursuit to retrieve something shiny from the ground. It was Chrisâ keys. He knew then he couldnât turn back, heâd have to go ahead and follow her.
He had no intention of touching her, but he sure would like to know what sent her into a panic. What caused her to take off like a doe in hunting season? And speaking of hunting, he seemed to suddenly have become the prey. Four muscular men stepped forward to stand two on each side of him. For an instant, he could only gaze at Chris in amazement, anger fighting with confusion. His jaw tightened and his dark eyes shot sparks. Then just as swiftly as his anger flared, it died down.
Lord, I donât know what youâre doing. I donât know what Iâm doing. I am totally in the dark here and would really appreciate you shining some light on this situation for me. Is this your way of telling me I got it all wrong thinking Chris is the woman you handpicked for me?
He turned slowly to eye each of the men surrounding him. They looked familiar, but at the moment he couldnât place where he had seen them. With another sharp glance at Chris, he handed Derrick her keys and calmly invited, "Gentlemen, shall we let the lady retire before we â talk?"
Derrick held Chris's door open, then handed her the keys.
Kirkâs jaw clenched as Chris stepped close, and pulling Derrick's head down to her level, she whispered in his ear.
Her words drifted to him across the short space. "Don't hurt him, Derrick, please. Make him go home â that's all."
Kirk almost laughed as confusion washed over the guy's face.
Lord, the kid doesnât have a clue. He hasnât learned yet that the fairer sex you created is impossible to understand, and this particular female is no exception. As the song goes, âWhy canât a woman be more like a man?â Sheâs not playing fair, Lord!
Derrick looked from Kirk to Chris and murmured, "Yes, maâam. You can be sure we'll tuck him in nice and gentle-like."
The dark-haired one next to Derrick leaned toward his friend as he eyed Kirk's muscular physique and met the calm dark gaze. âHope you arenât being a little too optimistic about this.â
Kirkâs chuckle broke loose. âCome on, fellas. Chris needs her beauty sleep. We can take our conversation elsewhere.â
He turned and strode away into the darkness with the four hulks shadowing him.
